Character guide for The Twits by Roald Dahl.

Main Characters

Mr Twit

Horrible, dirty, mean-spirited and cruel. His beard contains bits of old food. He sets cruel traps for birds and mistreats the caged monkeys.

Mrs Twit

Equally horrible — ugly on the inside because of her ugly thoughts. She has a glass eye. Both Twits represent the idea that ugliness of character produces ugliness of face.

The Muggle-Wumps

The caged monkey family — dignified, intelligent and longing for freedom. They are the moral contrast to the Twits.

The Roly-Poly Bird

A brightly coloured bird who speaks many languages and acts as a go-between for the Muggle-Wumps and the other birds.
