The novel shows Afghanistan through Aman's eyes (a child losing everything) and through Matt's grandfather's eyes (a British soldier). Ask pupils to compare these two perspectives: what do they share? What is different?
Aman arrives in England as an asylum seeker — alone, not speaking English, in an entirely unfamiliar place. Pupils write a diary entry from Aman's perspective on his first night in an asylum centre.
