Character guide for Romeo and Juliet.

Main Characters

Romeo

Passionate, impulsive and romantic. Romeo falls in love instantly and acts without thinking — marrying Juliet within hours of meeting her, killing Tybalt in rage. His impulsiveness drives the tragedy.

Juliet

More thoughtful and determined than Romeo despite being younger (thirteen years old). She takes the initiative in the balcony scene, questions the speed of their love, yet commits to it completely. Her courage in drinking the potion is one of the play's bravest acts.

Friar Lawrence

A well-meaning but ultimately reckless figure. His secret marriage and the sleeping potion plan set the tragedy in motion. He flees the tomb at the crucial moment.

Mercutio

Romeo's witty, volatile friend. His death is the turning point of the play — it is the moment Romeo makes the choice that leads to his banishment.

The Nurse

Juliet's confidante and surrogate mother. She helps facilitate the secret marriage but ultimately counsels Juliet to abandon Romeo for Paris — a betrayal Juliet cannot forgive.

Lord and Lady Capulet

Juliet's parents. Lord Capulet arranges Juliet's marriage to Paris without consulting her. His fury when she refuses reveals how little true agency Juliet has.
