Othello by William Shakespeare. Written approximately 1603. Studied at KS3 and GCSE.

Main Characters

Othello

A great general who is ultimately destroyed by jealousy — or more precisely by Iago's manipulation of his insecurity. He loves Desdemona absolutely and is therefore absolutely vulnerable to the suggestion that she is unfaithful.

Iago

One of Shakespeare's most compelling villains — intelligent, theatrical and motivated by a web of grievances. He manipulates everyone around him for sport as much as profit.

Desdemona

Innocent, devoted and courageous. She chooses Othello against her father's wishes and defends him to the end.

Emilia

Iago's wife — pragmatic and outspoken. Her growing awareness of Iago's villainy, and her courage in speaking the truth at the cost of her life, is one of the play's moral centres.

Cassio

Honourable but easily used as a tool by Iago. His friendship with Othello and Desdemona is entirely innocent.
