Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare. Written approximately 1598–1599. Studied at KS3 and GCSE.

Main Characters

Beatrice

Witty, sharp and fiercely independent. Her sparring relationship with Benedick is the heart of the play. Her instruction to Benedick to kill Claudio shows that beneath the comedy she has real depth of feeling and loyalty.

Benedick

The confirmed bachelor who swears he will never marry. Like Beatrice, he is quick-witted and self-aware. His willingness to challenge Claudio for Hero's sake shows genuine growth.

Hero

Gentle and obedient — a foil to Beatrice. Her public shaming is one of the most uncomfortable moments in Shakespearean comedy.

Claudio

He falls in love instantly, believes the worst immediately, and shames Hero publicly without proper evidence. Shakespeare presents him as dangerously susceptible to manipulation.

Don John

The play's villain — sullen, motiveless and malign. He plots against Claudio purely out of bitterness.

Dogberry

The constable whose mangled language (malapropisms) provides much of the comic relief — and whose bumbling investigations inadvertently save Hero.
