Farm Boy (1997) is a short but moving sequel to War Horse. Set in modern times, it tells the story of a young boy's relationship with his grandfather — the same Albert from War Horse, now very old. Albert tells the boy about his life on the farm and his connection with horses.
The boy visits his grandfather's farm in Devon and hears stories of Albert's life — including what happened after the events of War Horse. Albert describes his love of the land, horses and farming. When the grandfather dies, the boy inherits the farm and learns what it means to carry on a way of life.
Farm Boy assumes knowledge of War Horse — Albert's horse Joey is referenced. It is best read as a companion piece, exploring what Albert's life looked like after the war.
