Before You Read
- Have you ever wanted something very much but not been able to afford it? How did that feel?
- Look at the cover. What kind of world do you expect the story to take place in?
- What do you think a chocolate factory might look like inside?
While You Read
- Why does Dahl spend so much time describing how poor Charlie’s family is at the start?
- Each bad child has a different fault. Can you name the fault for each one as you meet them?
- What do you notice about each child’s parents? Is there a link between how the parents behave and how the children behave?
- How does Wonka react when each child gets into trouble? Does he seem upset? What does this tell you?
After You Finish
- Why do you think Dahl chose Charlie — rather than a clever or talented child — to win the factory?
- Is it fair that the four children are punished so harshly for their behaviour? Would you feel differently if the punishments were more serious?
- Grandpa Joe is bedridden for years but jumps out of bed when Charlie wins the Golden Ticket. What does this suggest about the power of excitement and hope?
- The factory is described as magical and impossibe. Why do you think Dahl didn’t try to explain how any of it works?
