For Parents and Teachers

This Year 3 comprehension follows Priya and her younger brother Leo as they start a new Minecraft world together. Written for age 7–8, it builds vocabulary around problem-solving, creativity and friendship, with ten questions testing retrieval, inference, vocabulary and reasoning — the core KS2 reading skills.

The Story: The Minecraft Adventure

Priya had been playing Minecraft for two years, but this was the first time she had ever shared a world with her little brother Leo.

"Don't dig straight down," she told him. "You'll fall into lava."

Leo frowned at his controller. "What's lava?"

"Hot melted rock that kills you instantly." She paused. "But don't worry. We'll start above ground."

They spawned in a bright green forest. Priya immediately began punching a tree to collect wood. Leo stared at the pixelated leaves fluttering in the digital breeze.

"This tree looks odd," he said.

"All trees look like that. It's part of the game. Come and help me chop."

They worked together for ten minutes, gathering wood until Priya's inventory was full. She showed Leo how to craft planks, then sticks, then a workbench, and finally — his eyes going wide — a pickaxe.

"Now we can mine," Priya said.

"Mine what?"

"Stone. Coal. Iron. Eventually diamonds, but that takes ages."

Leo gripped his new pickaxe. "I want diamonds."

"Everyone does," said Priya. "First we need a shelter before night comes."

"Why?"

She looked at him steadily. "Because at night the monsters spawn."

Leo's grip tightened. Together they found a hillside and dug a small cave, placing a door across the entrance just as the sky turned from orange to deep purple. From inside their shelter they could hear the low moan of zombies and the clatter of skeletons outside.

Leo pressed closer to his sister.

"Are we safe?" he whispered.

"In here we are," said Priya. "Tomorrow we'll build a proper house. With windows so we can see them coming."

Leo thought about this. "Glass windows?"

"Sand turns into glass when you smelt it in a furnace."

Leo was quiet for a moment, listening to the sounds outside. Then, very carefully, he started punching a hole in the back wall of the cave.

"What are you doing?" Priya asked.

"Making a room for our furnace," said Leo.

Priya smiled. He was learning faster than she had expected.
